The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment and the OPP Provincial Liaison Team are aware of a protest planned in Pembroke tomorrow (Tuesday, June 8th).
Residents are expected to gather for a Black Lives Matter protest starting at 3:00pm at the Amphitheater by the Pembroke Marina. Those planning to attend are asked to wear black, bring their own signs and wear a face mask. The peaceful, non-violent protest will see local residents march through downtown Pembroke.
Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment Commander, Inspector Stephan Neufeld, says they are dedicated to recognizing diversity, creating and maintaining cooperative and respectful relationships in the communities they serve. Neufeld says the OPP respects the rights of everyone to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
The local detachment commander says the OPP recognizes the importance of bias free policing and continues to proactively safeguard the rights and protections afforded all individuals. Neufeld also says they recognize the importance of a safe environment for the general public, local residents and businesses.
The OPP says everyone has the right to participate in demonstrations that are lawful, peaceful and safe.
