A teleconference has been scheduled to set new dates in the William or “Bill” Kirby trial.
Kirby was arrested in September of 2018 after a female was located in a wooded area of McNab/Braeside off of Gunsmith Road in critical condition. The 72-year-old from Mississippi Mills was initially charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated assault and criminal harassment.
Following a month and a half long police investigation an additional 23 charges were laid relating to four victims. The accused was charged with 10 counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault, unlawfully causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, four more counts of criminal harassment, mischief and three counts of uttering threats.
Back in January (2020), the judge ruled there will be two separate trials, one for historical assaults and the other for a more recent attempted murder incident. The first indictment includes the sexual assault charges dating back to the 1970’s involving two victims. The second trial is related to the attempted murder charges that were laid in September of 2018. Charges from a fourth complainant were withdrawn.
Kirby is now facing a total of 10 criminal charges including attempt to commit murder with a firearm, aggravated assault, threaten death or bodily harm, two counts of assault, one count of sexual assault, weapon at a public meeting, common assault and indecent assault.
The accused was supposed to have the first matter heard before the court at the end of June with the second trial in September, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic things have been rescheduled.
A teleconference will take place July 9th at 10:00am to set new dates in the Kirby matter.
