Hooray for Coaches Day is presented by Mickey’s Sports and Promotions. We are profiling Katie Skerkowski.
She’s loved the sport since she first watched her idol, Elizabeth Manley, take to the ice and she’s been skating for more than 30 years. Katie Skerkowski is a local coach with the Renfrew Figure Skating Club. When she turned 18 she decided it was time to share her passion with a younger generation, took all of the courses she needed and she’s never looked back. In discussing the rewards of coaching, Katie says there’s no better feeling than watching a skater master a skill they’ve been working on, she says the look on their face and the pride they feel in their accomplishment is one of a kind. Skerkowski is more than a coach, she feels invested in her students and prior to motherhood, she saw herself as a mentor, or a big sister to younger skaters, but now, with two children of her own, she says she feels more like a second mother to her students. Though some skaters go on to a national level in competition, Katie says the most important part of the sport is passion, you need to love to skate to excel.
